We are humbled at the reality of Your love,
and even at the very thought of it.
Never have You withheld it, and what is more,
You have invited us to drink it in deeply-
in all its height and width and depth.
We are sluggish in the ways that we love.
We want to love only as far as we feel it returned.
We feel justified in the limits we place on it,
and what is more, we treat it like money-
we gamble and barter and stingily withhold.
Renew in us the nature of your love.
Remind us that it is not a product,
not something that is rigidly managed.
May we find reason to love in Jesus Christ,
rather than investing in only what serves our interests.
May we abhor what is evil,
including our love's hypocrisy.
Teach us to delight in honoring others,
and in doing so, to revere You as Lord.
We praise You for entrusting us to love Your dear ones.
Grant us Your grace as we learn to do it well.
As we do, establish us further in Jesus, for He is love.
